21 Ridiculously Expensive Celebrity Divorces
It’s all fun and games during the dating stage, and the marriage part is supposed to be the best bit. But sometimes it’s not a happy ending, and just like the rest of us, divorces can get messy.
For ‘normal’ people, divorces are relatively straightforward. The worst part is deciding who gets the dog and the comfy sofa, but it’s a whole different ball game for the rich and famous.

Kelsey Grammer vs Camile Grammer
To be fair, he kind of deserved this as he did have an affair with then mistress Kayte Walsh. His infidelity cost him his marriage and $30 million. But we guess it wasn’t all bad for him, as he did go on to marry Kayte, around the time his divorce was finalised. They’ve since become parents .
Charlie Sheen vs Denise Richards
Nothing was particularly good about their time together and it certainly didn’t change after they split. Their divorce was messy and Sheen went as far as to evict Richards and their children from the family home. She was awarded $40 million and he was ordered to pay $10 million in child support for the first 15 years after their divorce.
Michael Douglas vs Diandra Luker
These two split after 18 years of marriage and Luker got to walk away with $45 million – half of the actors worth at the time. She also got to share the rights to some of his works produced during their marriage. In an interview long after their split, he admitted that his only regret was that his first marriage didn’t end sooner (as he’s now married to the stunning Catherine Zeta Jones).
Paul McCartney vs Heather Mills
As a former member of one of the most influential groups in the entire history of music, the ex Beatles musician was always going to have to pay out quite a sum should he be hit with a divorce. And that’s exactly what happened. He married his second wife, former model Heather Mills in 2002 but the two separated in 2006. They divorced acrimoniously in 2008 and Heather walked away with $48.6 million.
James Cameron vs Linda Hamilton
We’re surprised he has any money left considering he’s been married 5 times! The marriage itself only lasted for 8 months, but that was 8 months too long for Linda as she described their marriage as “terrible on every level.” He fell for Suzy Amis during filming of Titanic but decided to marry Hamilton. Within a year he had left his wife and returned to Amis, who he married in 2000 and has stayed with every since. His indecision cost him $50 million though.
Ron Parelman vs Ellen Barkin
The super-rich millionaire (he’s one of the richest men in America) married his fourth wife, actress Ellen Barkin in 2000 after meeting her at a Vanity Fair Oscar after party. They divorced six years later and it was pretty costly for the business mogul, as it cost him $60 million and a further $20 million in jewelry.
Kenny Rogers and Marianne Gordon
Country music icon and hall of famer Kenny Rogers was married to his now ex-wife Marianne Gordon back in the ’70s. Marianne Gordon was a cast member of the popular show Hee Haw. These two talented individuals were married from 1977 to 1993.This was Kenny Roger’s third marriage, and once again, the third time was not a charm as it cost him a cool $60 million.
Kevin Costner vs Cindy Silva
These two were college sweethearts but the two couldn’t make it work. So after 16 year and three children together, the two split in 1994. He wasn’t the best husband, and she reportedly grew tired of his cheating ways. The divorce cost him $80 million, which is a crazy amount considering it happened over twenty years ago.
Tom Cruise vs Nicole Kidman
They seemed like a match made in heaven, two huge Hollywood personalities getting together and living happily ever after – or not! Tom Cruise was a bit of a snake with this one, as he officially divorced her 72 hours before their 10th anniversary to avoid paying a more costly amount. But the actress was happy with her share regardless – we can see why, as $90 million isn’t exactly tuppence, is it!?
Harrison Ford vs Melissa Mathison
The two appeared to be a solid couple, but we were proved wrong back in 2001 when they decided to call it quits after 18 years. We’re not surprised she left him though as he started living like a single bachelor and having numerous public affairs. Mathison walked away with $90 million.
Bruce Willis vs Demi Moore
They had a whirlwind romance, marrying soon after meeting, but the two divorced suddenly in 2000 and no one knew why. He claimed that he felt he failed as a father and husband, and the pretty actress quickly moved on to her ex toy boy Ashton Kutcher. She managed to walk away with $90 million!
Madonna vs Guy Ritchie
These two managed to remain married for 8 years but they threw in the towel in 2008. The pop singer said the romance died between the pair and the film director called their marriage “a soap opera.” It was Madonna who had to pay up after the divorce though! It’s estimated that she paid between $76-92 million!
Tiger Woods vs Elin Nordegren
The famous golfer divorced his model wife after admitting to numerous affairs and she walked away with $100 million. She admitted that although she was embarrassed and blindsided by her husbands’ dishonest ways, she did want to give their marriage another shot. But she couldn’t get over the fact he cheated and no longer trusted her man, so the divorce was inevitable.
Steven Spielberg vs Amy Irving
Surpassingly, this divorce is one of the costliest in history, despite the fact it happened over 25 years ago in 1989! The couple divorced after 4 years together and she was awarded $100 million which included bounty from his huge hits, such as Jaws and E.T. The director stupidly wrote their prenup on a napkin and so it was pretty much null and void.
Neil Diamond vs Marcia Murphey
The American musician married for the second time in 1969 a few months after his divorce to his high school sweetheart had cleared. He stayed with Marcia for 25 years and the they had two sons together. The two split in 1994 and after he divorce was finalised, Marcia received $150 million. Ever the gentleman, Neil apparently said that she was worth every penny.
Michael Jordan vs Juanita Jordan
After 17 years together and three children, the couple decided their time together was over and divorced, stating “irreconcilable differences.” No prenup existed, so Juanita walked away with $168 million from their $400 million estate. It didn’t put him off for life though and the NBA star said I Do once again to his model partner Yvette Prieto.
Arnold Schwarzenegger vs Maria Shriver
These two were together for a quarter of a century before they decided to call it quits. She walked away with more than a quarter of the earning acquired over the two decades they were together though ($200 million actually) and with her head held high after the actor admitted to having an affair with a member of staff, with whom he fathered a child!
Mel Gibson vs Robyn Moore Gibson
In 2011, history was made and Robyn Moore Gibson was left with the highest divorce settlement Hollywood has ever seen! After 31 years together and 7 children (yes, 7!) the actor paid his dental nurse ex wife half of his fortune, just before announcing he was expecting his 8th child with Russian model Oksana Grigorieva. To add salt to the sounds, Robyn also got half of his film rights and will receive a cut of his Screen Actors Guild pension. It’s said that Robyn walked away with around $425 million. Ouch!
Adnan Khashoggi vs Soraya Khashoggi
Sudi businessman Adnan married the beautiful 20-year-old Soraya back in 1961 and in an act of love, she converted to Islam and even changed her name (formerly Sandra Daly) to be with him. By the 1980’s, Mr Khashoggi was worth $4 billion, owned 12 homes, 200 exotic animals and 100 limousines. When they divorced in 1982, he had to pay out $874 million to his former wife.
Bernie Ecclestone Vs Slavica Ecclestone
After 23 years of marriage together, the Croatian model filed for divorce on the grounds of the Formula One racing CEO’s “unreasonable behavior.” Slavica walked away with $1.2 billion in the divorce settlement.
Rupert Murdoch vs Anna Murdoch
The media mogul was married to his first wife Anna for more than thirty years, from 1967 to 1999. The couple divorced just before the new millennium and he agreed to give her $1.7 billion, including £100 million in cash. He went on to marry Wendi Deng just 17 days later, but the couple also divorced.
Ted Danson and Casey Coates
1993 saw Danson’s world come spinning to a very abrupt halt. The year before, he embarked on a very public affair with comedian Whoopi Goldberg while they worked together on the ‘Made in America’ film. The relationship would eventually lead to Danson’s divorce from then-wife Casey Coates which ended up as one of the most expensive divorces in Hollywood history. The divorce made it into the top 30 of all time list, and ended up costing Danson $30 million altogether!
They made plans to wed as soon as he could get a divorce, but under pressure from his parents, he dumped Whoopi, say sources, shattering her heart.
Alec Wildenstein vs Jocelyne Périsset
The late French businessman, art dealer, racehorse owner and most importantly, billionaire, married Jocelyn in 1978. She became renowned for her plastic surgery (it cost her $4 million) which she had done to make her husband pay attention to her. It didn’t get the result she intended though, and her then-husband apparently screamed in horror when he first saw her new face. Jocelyne then found her husband in bed with another woman, he threatened her with a gun (landing himself in jail for the night) and she filed for divorce. After a drawn-out court hearing, she was awarded $2.5 billion as she claimed she needed $1 million a month to run her household as she had depended on servants for so long, she couldn’t do much for herself anymore. Along with the $2.5 billion, she also received $100 million each year for 13 years after.
Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington
Quaid is now on failed marriage number 3, after he and 45-year-old real estate businesswoman Kimberly Buffington filed divorce papers in March 2012, Buffington withdrew her petition and filed for legal separation in October, as well as the sole physical and legal custody of their two children. She requested that their $40 million assets be split down the middle.
Greg Norman and Laura Andrassy
Greg was married to Laura Andrassy from 1981 to 2006. Laura received a whopping $103 million settlement, from “The Shark.” This had to have left a nasty taste in his mouth and a sweet taste in Laura’s mouth.
Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt
Jamie McCourt was the co-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers with husband Frank. In October 2009 it went downhill for the husband and wife owners when Frank fired his own wife! They had a bitter dispute over the ownership of the team. Frank finally gave Jamie $130 million and Jamie gave up her ownership stake of the Dodgers.
Garth Brooks and Sandy Mahl
Garth Brooks and his ex-wife Sandy Mahl started off as young lovers and then got married a few years later. The way Garth met her was interesting. He saw his future wife was about to get into a fight with another woman and he intervened.
They were married for thirteen years, but all good things must come to an end. Garth ended up shelling out $125 million to Mahl.
Phil Collins and Orianne Cevey
Phil Collins may have set a record in Britain with the amount of money that he had to hash out during his divorce. Phil Collins was married to a lady by the name of Orianne Cevey who was of Swiss descent. They got married in 1999 and had two sons, Nicholas and Matthew. In 2008 they ended up getting a divorce that cost Collins a cool $47 million.
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood
Although this hasn’t happened yet, it is rumored that the two country singers are struggling.
Brooks’ previous wife took $125million off him, so you can only imagine what Tricia will be looking for.
Dr. Phil McGraw and Robin McGraw
There have been plenty of rumors circulated over the last few years about Dr Phil and wife Robin. The couple even sued the ‘Daily Enquirer’ for $250 million for a series of stories they’d published over the last 10 years. If the couple were to divorce it would cost Phil a cool $335 million.
